Be Confident - It may be easier said than done, but once you strip away all the superficial stuff, many men are most attracted to women who are self-possessed and self-assured of who they are. It doesn’t mean you should be snotty or stuck up, it just means that you are confident enough in what you have to offer that you can make yourself vulnerable enough to approach a stranger.(Photo: Marnie Burkhart/Corbis)

Make Eye Contact - But don’t just make it, hold it. Sustained eye contact is super-intimate, and it will signal your intentions before you even open your mouth. (Photo: Steve Prezant/Corbis)

Ask a Question - Men love to answer questions and solve problems. But don’t play dumb and ask him something you already know. If you’re at a bar, maybe ask him to suggest a drink you might like. If you don't know what song is playing, ask if he does. If he’s sitting alone on the train, ask if the seat beside him is taken. Ask where he bought his cool T-shirt. Introduce Yourself - It seems simple, but you’d be surprised how many folks skip this step. It gives you somewhere to go after he answers your question, and lets him know that you intend to chat him up. Smile, make direct eye contact, tell him your name and then pay attention when he says his. If he’s taken, this is when he’ll probably let you know.(Photo: Sonja Pacho/Corbis)

Give Him a Compliment - Everybody likes to have their ego stroked. Now’s the time to give him a genuine compliment, whether you’re telling him that he has a sexy smile or giving him props for his shoe choice. If he’s a decent person, he’ll say thanks and the banter will flow. (Photo: JPM/Corbis)

Listen - By now, you should be having an actual conversation. And, just like any other conversation you have, it’s key to listen to what he says. He will signal if he’s interested or not fairly quickly. You just have to hear the clues. (Photo:  JLP/Jose L. Pelaez/Corbis)

Ask for What You Want - If the conversation is going well, but he hasn’t yet asked for your number, you can do that, too. Just say something like, “I’ve really enjoyed talking to you, but I need to get back to my friends. Can we exchange numbers?”(Photo: Inti St Clair/Blend Images/Corbis)
