Are you ready for some football? We’re just days away from the 2015 NFL preseason kickoff this Sunday, Aug. 9. But there’s a whole season of gridiron action coming ahead, and you’ll definitely want a #winning look for all those watch parties you’ll be attending!
Actress Tika Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots, Ride Along 2) is among the celebrity faces fronting the NFL’s 2015 Women’s Apparel campaign, along with fellow actresses Jamie Chung, Alyssa Milano, Dascha Polanco and swimsuit model Erin Heatherton. The stars will be featured in print and digital ads and will serve as social media ambassadors, showing their love for the versatile new collection of tops, tanks, jerseys and more.

B*Real sat down with Sumpter (who admits she’s a diehard Carolina Panthers fan), to chat about her role in the campaign and how she plans to style her favorite pieces on game day.
B*Real: When you were approached to take part in this campaign, what made you say yes?
Tika Sumpter: The clothes are so cool, chic and on-trend. It’s something where you don’t have to wear it to a game, you know what I mean? I just thought it was a cool concept [and] I love the NFL. Football is awesome. So I was like, “Sign me up!”
You’re getting back to your modeling roots in the official look books for the collection.
I am! It’s kind of like a sporty, I-could-be-on-my-way-to-the-gym, I-could-be-on-my-way-to-get-my-nails-done-after-the-gym kind of look. That’s the cool thing about the apparel; it has your favorite team on it but it doesn’t scream, “Oh my God, I’m going to a game right now.” It’s like a cute tee or a boyfriend shirt [that] you can put with some leggings [and go]. There’s a lot of cute stuff.
What’s your favorite piece from the women’s apparel line?
One of my favorite pieces is on Jamie Chung. She’s wearing this 49ers jersey, but she’s wearing boyfriend jeans with it and heels. It’s short in the front and a little bit longer in the back. It’s red and white and it’s so dope.
Let’s say you’re going on a date to watch a football game. What’s your go-to outfit?
I want to be as comfortable as possible, because if they’re serving some chicken wings and all the football foods at parties, I want to wear something comfy. So, maybe some cute jeans and [any one] of the tops with a cute hat. You want to be comfy, but you still want to be cute and represent your team.
How about any beauty tips, especially for when you’re watching an outdoor game?
Yes, it’s going to be hot and sweaty! You just want to mist a little water on your face and put a little foundation on and call it a day. Just go and have fun! It’s about being comfortable.
Why do you think it’s relevant that NFL reaches out to its female audience in a way that’s fresh and modern?
I think it’s important because I think the NFL knows that there are a lot of women that participate in watching the games and there are a lot of women who want to represent their team. But the regular jerseys are a little big and they don’t make you feel too sexy. And sexy doesn’t mean tight, it just means comfort, and it fits, and it’s chic and it’s on-trend. Bravo to the NFL for looking out for women who want to make a fashion statement while screaming their heads off at the ref. [Laughs]
Good point! Some women aren’t very knowledgeable about the rules of football and may even feel shy about attending a game or watching at home with a crowd. How did you get to the place where you felt comfortable hanging out with the guys while still being yourself and enjoying the game?
It took a while, actually, and I’m still learning. But when I’m into it, I’m just in to it. I’m screaming, I’m explaining stuff to my sisters. I got into it by just being around people who are into it. Also, social media is great because it’s like watching with one big family. I would say don’t be intimidated by it, just watch it. The more you watch something, the more you’ll understand what yards are, interceptions and all the lingo. You can learn the lingo, you’ve just got to be interested.
