Since 1990, Geoffrey Canada has been changing the scope of American public education. As the president and CEO of Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), which focuses on increasing high school and college graduation rates, he's not only affected the lives of children in Harlem, but influenced others to improve educational opportunities throughout the nation. Canada is also a member of the Board of Trustees for The After-School Corporation, a non-profit aimed at expanding educational opportunities for all students. In 2009, President Barack Obama announced his plan to mirror HCZ in 20 other American cities. Canada's efforts have brought him national attention and earned him a number of honorable awards. The Harvard-educated two-time author has been featured on talk shows and in books, documentaries and even a commercial. In 2005, U.S. News and World Report named him one of "America's Best Leaders."
