Cardi B Says Her Body Type Makes It Difficult to Wear Luxury Brands

Over time, the rapper's style aesthetic has evolved, but it seems that fashion houses are long overdue for outdated standards to be raised.

Cardi B's curves are giving her peach-sized problems in the dressing room.

Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter dropped its annual Power Stylists issue, and the "Money" rapper and her longtime stylist, Kollin Carter are featured on one of its covers. Cardi is known for her luxurious style, punctuated by revered brands, but it hasn't always been smooth sailing for the star.

Before landing the cover of THR, she had been very outspoken about her preference for fast fashion over luxury items. On her 2018 hit single "She Bad" featuring YG, she rapped "I could buy designer, but this Fashion Nova fit."

Six years later, fit continues to be one of her strongest opps.

"There are so many obstacles against us. For example, this body is not meant for a size two. I’m very hips, a -- , and that’s me,” she told the outlet.

“It was not easy, but we make it look easy. Our door was closed many times,” she said. “But we’re here because we do it well. I’m not going to be humble about it.”

As Cardi's stylist, Carter acknowledges their influence on the music and fashion industry, and beyond.

“We caused a cultural shift. I don’t think there were many women like Cardi who existed in the fashion space,” he explained “Now there are a ton of other rap females who aspire to be in that space because they see what’s possible. We set trends.”

His most memorable fashion moment from the rapper occurred at the MET Gala in 2019 when she wore an oxblood Thom Brown gown elevated by tulle, layers of silk organza, feathers, and ruffles.

“That look broke Cardi B into the next level of the fashion world. People who didn’t take us seriously were like: ‘Okay, they’re here to stay,’” he noted.
