Two gunmen opened fire and shot 13 people in Cornell Square Park in the South Side of Chicago Thursday night, in an incident police say is gang-related.
Around 10:15 p.m. Thursday, two men got out of a gray vehicle and began shooting at a group gathered at a basketball court in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to the Chicago Sun Times. Deonta Howard, a 3-year-old boy, was shot in the face. After undergoing surgery his condition went from critical to stable as of this morning, according to ABC News.
The ages of the wounded range from 3 to 41. Across the city, 18 people were wounded in four hours, and a 36-year-old man died from multiple gun shot wounds in a different incident from the park shooting.
The family of Deonta has been affected by gun violence before when his uncle Jerome “J Money” Wood, 21, was shot in the head and died on Sept. 2 in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
Gun violence in Chicago continues to wound and take the lives of innocent youth who were innocent bystanders. Maurice Knowles, 16, was killed while sitting on his porch Labor Day weekend. At only six months, Jonylah Watkins was killed in gunfire targeted at her father in March. And in January, Hadiya Pendleton, 16, who marched in the Inaugural parade, was shot at a park and killed.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have both made separate trips to Chicago to speak on solutions to the plague of gun violence happening in the city.
