Cam Newton and Ashley Nicole Reveal the Magic of ‘106 & Sports’

The hosts of BET’s new hit show discuss the genuine chemistry that fuels their dynamic and how the electric live audience creates an approach 'for the culture.'

Just over a month into its run, “106 & Sports” is swiftly redefining the sports media landscape by daring to ask the questions everyone else is avoiding. Hosted by the dynamic duo of former NFL MVP Cam Newton and rising media star Ashley Nicole, the show has generated significant buzz by offering a platform that is both fun and safe, while remaining fiercely direct and culturally relevant.

For Ashley Nicole, the most rewarding part of the launch has been the gratification of seeing a long-gestating project come to fruition.

“I would just say, honestly, being able to really see what has been talked about for so long,” she shared. "This has been months leading up to this very moment. Cam and I obviously have been part of the entire experience from the beginning, since we announced it at the BET Awards."

She describes the experience of seeing the show "pieced together" and watching the finished result—including the audience response—as deeply "heartwarming."

Cam Newton’s reward is far more immediate. The former NFL quarterback pointed directly to the electric, live studio audience. “The best thing for me has definitely been the... live experience with the audience,” he stated. He explained that coming from a world where he and Ashley have done endless content, doing it in front of a crowd regularly is uniquely rewarding. The energy of the crowd, he noted, “suspends any type of thought, and it just automatically puts you in a good vibe, a good approach, because, you know, for the culture.”

The Authentic Foundation: Legacy and Chemistry

The show’s title is a clear nod to the iconic "106 & Park," and while that legacy is respected, the hosts are insistent on establishing their own authentic identity.

“I think for me, it was authenticity,” Cam said when asked what elements they wanted to carry over. He recognizes that a show of that caliber doesn't achieve such a long run without being true to itself. However, he quickly tempered expectations: “One of the things me and Ashley were extremely honest with ourselves was that this is not that. We went into this approach with something knowing that, hey, we want to be different, we want to be ourselves, but also stay true to... what we are asked to do in a very unique way.”

That unique approach relies heavily on the genuine connection between the hosts. Ashley Nicole emphasized that when you think of “106 & Park,” you think of the chemistry of pairs like AJ and Free, or Rocsi and Terrence J. She stressed that the chemistry viewers see on air with her and Cam is not manufactured.

“The chemistry that you see on air is very much the chemistry that exists when the cameras are down, or when we’re in dress rehearsal,” she affirmed. “It’s about being able to poke fun at each other, it's about being able to hold each other accountable, and really reflect... what made ‘106’ so much fun to watch.”

The Quarterback’s Strategy: No Shelving

This authentic dynamic allows them to dive into their core guest philosophy: directness. Ashley Nicole summed up their approach for interviews with athletes like Chad Johnson and Brittney Griner: “The philosophy has been this is going to be a fun space, it’s going to be a safe space, but it’s also going to be a space where we ask the questions, or can ask the questions that everybody is itching to know.”

She pointed out the stark difference between their show and traditional sports media, which often operates with restrictive “parameters in what you can say, what you shouldn’t say.” On “106 & Sports,” she says, “no punches are held, but it’s always from a place of love... this is family talking to family, but we gotta be real with each other.”

Cam Newton, drawing on years of experience on the other side of the microphone, admitted he intentionally seeks out the difficult topics. “I will not leave an opportunity out there that everybody is wanting to ask,” Cam asserted. “Does that make me a bad guy, or does that make me the guy that I'm going to ask what everybody’s thinking?”

He noted that you can "harm more by having access to a specific individual and shelving what everybody really wants to know." This willingness to tackle real issues—from the brewing banter with DeMarcus Cousins to topics surrounding Ocho Cinco—is informed by his own history.

“In order to not be burnt, you have to have been burnt,” he reflected, acknowledging his past experiences with the media. Knowing what the athletes are going through, Cam ensures he asks sensitive questions “as direct as I possibly can for any person that may pick up the story or cover the story.” This transparency is a key part of his strategy, ensuring that the dialogue is "in plain sight" and minimizing the chance of being taken out of context. The goal is always to ask the right question at the right time, understanding whether an athlete is "in season" or facing distractions.

Impacting the Community: The HBCU Imprint

This commitment to cultural relevance extends beyond the studio, focusing on institutions often overlooked by traditional sports media. Ashley Nicole highlighted the show’s powerful connection to the Black community through its outreach efforts.

“Cam and I have been really fortunate to be able to have an imprint in HBCUs this season, and that’s something that a lot of, if not all, of the more traditional landscapes... that’s not something everybody can do and have an impact,” she noted.

This connection provides undeniable proof that the show has successfully tapped into the cultural pulse. Recalling a recent visit to Lincoln Financial, she described fans flocking to Cam, cheering, “Cam, Cam! It’s like, that’s different than you get anywhere else.” This immediate community resonance underscores the importance of having diverse networks and platforms dedicated to telling sports stories from a culturally informed perspective.

More Than the Headlines: Narrative Diversity

Ultimately, Ashley Nicole hopes the show teaches viewers that there are “multiple ways to tell the same story.” She argues that just because a story has been told over and over again “doesn’t mean there’s not more to peel from that person or from that experience.”

By providing a network and hosts who “understand culture,” they reveal different versions of athletes that viewers might not see elsewhere. She believes the environment they create fosters genuine interaction. “I feel the version we get of a DeMarcus Cousins is different than he would be elsewhere,” she said, underscoring the magic of a show that knows its audience. By continually offering different perspectives on the stories fans think they know everything about, “106 & Sports” is staking its claim as the essential cultural hub for sports conversations.
