Hip Hop Awards 2022: Envision the Culture with These ‘Best Hip Hop Video’ Winners
We are slowly gearing up for one of the biggest celebrations in hip hop music and culture at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, making its return to Atlanta, GA. Ahead of the show, we’re looking back at past hosts, show stopping performances, and unforgettable winners moments, including some of the biggest songs to take home, “Best Hip Hop Awards.”

Kendrick Lamar — “Alright”
In 2015, Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” took “Best Hip Hop Video.” The 7-minute-long video was directed by Colin Tilley and The Little Homies and shot entirely in black and white. It featured cameos from former TDE labelmates ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock.
Cardi B. Feat. Megan Thee Stallion — “WAP”
Colin Tilley-directed videos have often found themselves in the BET Hip Hop Awards winners circle. His direction behind Cardi B. 's visual for “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion found the director’s name in that familiar space at the 2021 ceremony after taking home “Best Hip Hop Video.”
Childish Gambino — “This Is America”
Childish Gambino’s music video for “This is America” took home “Best Hip Hop Video” at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards beating out several big visuals, including Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” and Common and John Legend’s “Glory,” Chris Brown’s “Loyal” and many more.
The visual was directed by filmmaker Hiro Murai and addresses the issue of gun violence in the United States, the high rate of mass shootings in the United States, and other social problems rooted in systemic racism and discrimination.
Chris Brown Feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes — “Look at Me Now”
Award-winning director Colin Tilley directed the cinematic music video for the 2011 “Best Hip Hop Video winner at BET Hip Hop Awards. The visual paid homage to old-school rap videos, and it’s highly regarded as Chris Brown’s come-back effort from his 2011 album F.A.M.E. following a scandal-filled few years and the release of his third studio album Graffiti two years before.
Kanye West Feat. T-Pain — “Good Life”
Grammy Award-winning rapper Kanye West enlisted So-Me for his partial animation for the visual for his 2007 track “Good Life,” featuring rapper and singer T-Pain. The project was Jonas and François. It finds the two entertainers performing with animated backdrops on a white background and often mouthing the words of the song lyrics, which appear in large letters.
The video took home several accolades, including a 2008 BET Hip Hop Award for “Best Hip Hop Video.”
