This Week In Good Black News: Meg The Stallion Is Stunned By A Twerk Performance, The White House Celebrates Juneteenth And Tony Winners Make History

What a week it has been. Outside of various court cases involving the illegal storage of documents, Megan Thee Stallion is in love with a twerk performance, the White House invited Method Man and Jennifer Hudson to help them celebrate Juneteenth and Black, nonbinary Broadway talents made history at the Tony Awards. Here is "This Week in Good Black News." 

  • Megan Thee Stallion Is Wowed By A Twerk Performance That Is Not Her Own

    It takes a lot to impress Megan Thee Stallion when it comes to twerking, but super fan Markell Washington did just that over the weekend at L.A. Pride in the Park festival in Los Angeles. Robinson wrote on IG, “ANYONE WHO KNOWS ME……..KNOWS I LOVEEEEEE ME SOME MEGAN THEE STALLION.” He added, “BROUGHT ME ON STAGE AND I HAD TO EEAATTTTTTT !!!!!”

  • The White House Celebrates Juneteenth

    On June 13, the White House celebrated Juneteenth on the South Lawn. The event was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Pernod Ricard USA, STARZ #TaketheLead Initiative and the Recording Academy. Jennifer Hudson, Method Man Ledisi, Broadway icon Audra McDonald and several others performed. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

  • Lil’ Kim Celebrates Her Daughter's Birthday

    Lil' Kim’s daughter Royal turned 9 years old and the hip hop legend celebrated with The Little Mermaid.  "So today we shut down @ipic with a private screening of The Little Mermaid @hallebailey cause it's a Royal Reign Mermaid kind of Day!,” Kim wrote on IG. “Thank U to everyone at @ipic! U guys really took great care of us, and we appreciate it so much!" She also added, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY BEAUTIFUL LITTLE PRINCESS BEE @royalreignjones Mommie loves u soooooooo much! We will now be heading over to the next private location Moms, Dads, and Kids! Let’s have some Fun!!! 🙌.”

  • Lil Nas X Joins Forces With Coach

    On June 12, Lil’ Nas X partnered with Coach to lend his fashion sense and wisdom to prepare students for the real world as part of the brand's Coach Foundation Dream Day. He told PEOPLE, "I'm really happy to be partnering up with Coach and this program that's helping other people's dreams come true, because I know how it feels for me to be achieving my own dreams.” 

    The initiative offers participants a day of hands-on training that includes mentorship, networking, and professional development for selected students around the globe. See a clip above.

  • Slutty Vegan Founder and CEO Pinky Cole Marries Derrick Hayes

    Entrepreneurs Pinky Cole and Derrick Hayes have officially tied the knot! On June 10, the Slutty Vegan founder and CEO, 35, exchanged vows with the Big Dave's Cheesesteaks founder at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta in front of 300 guests including Jeezy, Jeannie-Mai Jenkins, Doug E. Fresh, 106 & Park alum AJ Calloway, Yandy Smith-Harris and Mendeecees Harris

    The couple also announced they are expecting their "third and final" child together, making his debut this December. Congrats to the happy couple! 

  • J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell Make History

    Broadway stars J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell are the first openly nonbinary Tony Award winners. On June 11, J. Harrison Ghee won Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Some Like It Hot. Newell won Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Shucked. Watch Newell’s powerful speech above.

  • Trump Is Booked and Arrested...Again.

    The rich and powerful are rarely held accountable, but on June 13, former President Donald Trump was booked and arrested. He became the first former president in U.S. history to be charged with a federal crime by the Justice Department. Federal prosecutors arraigned Trump on 37 felony counts connected with his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House. According to the federal indictment, the ex-president “endeavored to obstruct the FBI and grand jury investigations and conceal the retention of classified documents." It also names former White House valet and Trump aide Walt Nauta as a co-conspirator. If convicted, Trump faces a long prison sentence. There is no word on when the trial will begin.

  • The Apollo Theater Raised Over $2 Million At Annual Spring Benefit Concert

    On June 12, the Apollo Spring Benefit raised over $2.2 million, according to a press release. With performances from Gladys Knight, MC Lyte, and Wyclef Jean, Black excellence was in full effect. Additionally, Spike Lee presented the Impact Award to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Sean “Diddy” Combs received the prestigious Icon Award.

  • Uzo Aduba Is Preggers!

    Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba is expecting her first child with her husband, Robert Sweeting. On June 11, she showed off her baby bump at the 2023 Tony Awards in New York City. Aduba wrote on Instagram, “What a blessing. My husband Robert and I are so happy to enter this next chapter together as parents. I am beyond.” See above.
