Speaking during the EncourageHERS luncheon earlier today in Washington D.C., Common, who interviewed honoree Ava DuVernay at the event, touched on various issues plaguing the Black community in America today. Some of his most standout comments, however, were his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick's protest of the National Anthem, with the rapper/actor likening him to recently passed American hero Muhammad Ali.
"He's showing a lot of courage and selflessness. He's showing in a non-violent and intelligent way that he cares for people," he said of the NFL quarterback. "He cares about the injustices that are going on and he wants people to be aware. [I] also acknowledge that he's even seeking out ways to solve this but he doesn't want to just allow it to go on and no act like it doesn't matter to him and it should matter to all of us. I commend him."
The MC thinks so highly of Colin that he's compared his brave recent efforts to that of Muhammad Ali's activist in past years.
"As I spoke about Muhammad Ali, as Muhammad Ali was an athlete who did things beyond the sport because of his selflessness, i think Colin Kaepernick is a great example of what we can do as individuals to show that we care for the injustices and care for all people. I love that he had that courage. It takes a lot to do."
