On Friday's episode of The Talk, co-hosts Linda Perry and Sheryl Underdood discussed why they thought Madonna had been chosen to honor Prince at the upcoming Billboard Music Award show. Perry took the opportunity to throw some major shade at a former Prince collaborator.
"There's an uproar right now because there's 5000 fans who signed a petition so they're kinda upset by this," Underwood explained, of the backlash against Madge. When Underwood named one of Prince's former lovers, and collaborators, Sheila E. as a possible replacement, Perry felt it was necessary to shut that down.
"In all fairness, Madonna was asked to do this and she was friends with Prince but you also have to think about it's really the Billboard Awards, they think about who is hot and popular," Perry responded. "They're not gonna call up Chaka Khan and re-put together The Time and Sheila E. because they're not relevant right now."
Those comments made their way to Sheila E. who responded with some pretty strong words of her own.
"On behalf of musicians, artists, creators, performers and anyone aspiring to be one of those, YOU ARE RELEVANT!" Sheila E. wrote. "It was exactly that type of attitude and comment, recently conveyed on a talk show by a misinformed guest, that Prince, Paisley Park and those who have been an extension of, continually fought, and still fight, against." Adding, "The creations and the creators, contrary to fleeting popularity or fame, is what breathes life into art. The lack of understanding, and myopic view of dollars over sense is what perpetuates the ignorance that continually works against the artist, and the industry. I am offended! #RELEVANT"
The drummer also posted a photoshopped image inspired by the recent film The Revenant, calling her story The Relevant.
Seems Sheila E. is not intent on going down without a fight! In Perry's defense, however, she did have words of support for Sheila E. and other artists who she thinks would do a great job of honoring the icon, and criticized the Billboard Awards for staying within the mainstream. "The Billboards are about what is gonna sell their show. Right now, Madonna being up there this is selling the show. If the show was honestly creative and thought bigger, they could've had an amazing show with The Time and Sheila E., Chaka Khan, Lenny Kravitz."
Perhaps an apology is in order. Or perhaps Sheila E. should put her money where her mouth is and hold a tribute show of her own.
