Lil Kim vs. Foxy Brown: A Brief History

A look back at key moments in the rap divas' beef.

Lil Kim vs. Foxy Brown: A Brief History - Foxy Brown made waves yet again when she tore into Lil Kim by performing her diss track "Massacre" at a club in Newark, N.J., earlier this week. But this isn't the first time the two rap divas have fired shots (sometimes even real shots) at each other—far from it. It Was All So Simple Then... - Kim's and Foxy's lives and careers started out on similar paths. Raised just miles apart in Brooklyn, they ended up going to the same high school briefly. B.I.G. took Lil Kim under his wing, and his boy Jay-Z brought Foxy into the game. Kim ran with her crew Junior M.A.F.I.A., and Fox ran with Nas’s The Firm. The two started out as friends, and even shared the cover of The Source magazine in 1997. (Photo: Source Magazine)

Collision Course - But was the game big enough for the both of them? Both Kim and Ms. Brown began to build buzz with a mix of sex appeal and a tough Brooklyn edge. They even ended up releasing their debut albums, pictured here, just a week apart in November 1996. Sometimes a showdown seemed inevitable.    (Photos: Big Beat Records; Def Jam Records)

First Blood - Sure enough, rumors began to emerge of tension between the two. Then Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen reportedly offered Kim and Fox half a million each to record an album together, to be titled Thelma & Louise, but it didn’t happen, supposedly because of clashing egos. Subliminal Diss - The simmering tension finally reaches wax on Junior M.A.F.I.A. rapper Lil' Cease's 1999 "Play Around," which featured Diddy and Lil' Kim. In the song, Diddy raps, "Stop trying to sound like her, b-----s," which many thought was directed at Fox.(Photo: Atlantic Records)

Breaking Out - Lil' Kim's Notorious KIM album artwork left little to the imagination (per her usual), but we were happy nonetheless. Not to mention that the album (the rapper's second studio effort) reached platinum status back in 2000. (Photo: Atlantic Records)

Shots Fired - Kim takes the war of words up a big notch on the first verse of the title track to her sophomore album, The Notorious K.I.M. This time she leaves no doubt as to who she’s talking about: Girls say they different, but uh seeIn all actuality, they wanna be meThis chick running around with this stink-ass gapAnd them fake-ass raps having panic attacksYou ain't a starAnd your record company know thatHow you make all this money, you just fart and blow it?I'm a businesswoman now so I'm not concernedI'd bet on Lil' Cease before you and your Firm(Photo: Universal Records)

Return Fire - Fox finally responded on wax, lighting into Lil Kim with a ferocious guest verse on Capone-N-Noreaga’s “Bang Bang,” and even touching on her relationship with the late Biggie:You talk slick, f---is all that sneak s---?You and Diddy, y'all kill me with that subliminal s---, b---hWhy's you frontin and kickin that street s---?Please, impress me, go back to that freak s---….Let the nigga rest in peace, and hop off his d---, b---h do youAnd ya'll h--s is like "f--- Fox," well screw y'all too(Photo: Tommy Boy Records)

More Than Words - For the first time, the war between the two divas draws blood—real blood. On February 25, 2001, Lil Kim and her entourage run into Capone and his crew at New York’s Hot 97 radio station. An argument ensues, and shots are fired, leaving one man injured. In 2005 Kim (seen here entering the courtroom with her lawyer) spends a year in prison after lying to the Feds about her crew’s role in the incident.(Photo: Scott Gries/Getty Images)

Let’s Be Friends - A week after the shooting, Fox extends an olive branch. "I really don't know how it started," she said of the beef. "I want to call a truce… I want to have a sit-down with Kim. I don't care what it is. Let's just end it. We can even do a collaboration. We're bigger than this."(Photo: Lawrence Lucier/Getty Images)

Snake in the Grass - Lil Kim spoke on the pair’s long-running beef last year: "I don't even want to mention her. One moment she got something bad to say about me, one moment she got something good to say. I don't like that flip flop s---, that just means that you're still crazy! My mom always told me if you know there's a snake in the grass, and you know it's a snake that bit you before, why would you pick it back up? I'm not picking back up anymore snakes no more.”

Last Word - With Kim’s name garnering buzz in light of her back-and-forths with Nicki Minaj, Foxy jumped back into the fray once more with “Massacre” earlier this year, dissing Kim and giving props to Nicki: Brooklyn, baby, y'all taking it homeWith just my Timbs on and my microphoneGlass house, throwing them stonesBear witness to the rise and fall of Miss Kimberly Jones(Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images)
