Mara Brock and Salim Akil Remaking 'Sparkle'

The creator and executive producer of The Game announce plans to remake the 1976 cult classic film.

Mara Brock Akil and her husband, Salim Akil, have announced plans to remake a 1970s musical long hailed as a cult classic.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the married duo behind BET’s The Game will remake the 1976 film, Sparkle, with producer Debra Martin Chase.

The story centered on the story of the Williams sisters, who started singing in their Harlem church choir before going on to become a successful girl group.

Their personal lives soon unraveled once they achieved stardom

The film originally stared Irene Cara, Phillip Michael Thomas, and Mary Alice.

THR confirms that Mara Brock Akil will write the screenplay while her husband directs.
