It’s been 35 years since a cartoon blaxploitation film (Coonskin) made it to the big screen. Now Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, having picked up the series Black Dynamite, is bringing an animated form of the super-badness to the small screen.
Based on the 2009 feature film, which starred Michael Jai White, the animated series is scheduled to debut in spring 2012. The show will further follow the adventures of Black Dynamite, and ex-CIA agent and full-time ladies' man. In true blaxploitation style, Dynamite and his crew avenge the death of his brother, going against drug-dealing pimps, kung-fu masters and, of course, The Man.
The Boondocks writer Carl Jones is spearheading the series. And it features the voices of Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley and Byron Minns, all of whom starred in the film.
Black Dynamite will be animated by Titmouse. White, Minns and Scott Sanders are producers.
