Antoine Fuqua Nixes Tupac Biopic to Direct Eminem in Southpaw

Eminem’s first role since “8 Mile” is one step closer to happening.

Until recently, director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Shooter, Brooklyn's Finest) was slated to direct a biopic about the late Tupac Shakur, a project that was supposed to begin shooting later this year. Now rumor has it that he’s moving on to take over a boxing drama that has Eminem’s name attached.

The film, Southpaw, will have Eminem playing a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to tragedy. He must fight to win back his life for his young daughter. Eminem’s life was a inspiration for the script.

While the deal to bring Fuqua onto this new film isn’t set, The L.A. Times reports things are moving forward. The rapper can probably thank the Oscar-winning movie The Fighter for a resurgence of interest in this project.
