Missed the Tyler Perry "dramedy" when it was in theaters?
Tyler Perry reprises his role as the wise-cracking, no-nonsense matriarch Madea in Lionsgate’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which hits DVD and Blu-ray today (August 30).
In the comedy-drama, Madea helps her niece, Shirley (Loretta Devine), rally her grown, preoccupied children together so they can hear about their mother's health diagnosis. Natalie Desselle Reid, Shannon Kane and Shad "Bow Wow" Moss play the offspring that are too caught up in their own lives to offer their mother any support — until Madea steps in with a healthy dose of tough love. Isaiah Mustafa, who rose to fame through the Old Spice ads, co-stars.
Perry adapted the film from a 2010 play he wrote and toured with after his mother passed. He has called the movie an instrument for getting through his own grief. “I think this movie was the catharsis for a lot that I was going through," Perry told The New York Times. “What I wanted people to walk away [with] from in this movie is, no matter what’s happening in your life, no matter how tragic, live the best life that you can.”
