The N.W.A Biopic: Is John Singleton Directing Or Not?

The Abduction director says “maybe” but, so far, the movie’s studio says he doesn’t make the cut.

It appears that the N.W.A. biopic is quickly moving forward and will soon be in production, but exactly who will be directing the film is still not known.

The initial buzz was that director John Singleton would be at the helm of Straight Outta Compton. The Boyz n the Hood director recently told Playlist that it was very likely that he and Ice Cube (as film producer) would be collaborating on the big screen tale of the West Coast gangsta rap pioneers. "I can't talk about it too prematurely about the stuff I'm doing because nothing's come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A story," Singleton said. "The script is really, really good and we're just figuring it out. New Line [Cinema] really wants to make it."

But, according to Vulture, industry insiders say that New Line Cinema, the studio behind Straight Outta Compton, is only considering three possible talents to possibly fill the top dog spot behind the scenes: Ice Cube's Friday director F. Gary Gray, Craig Brewer, who directed Hustle & Flow, and Peter Berg, the director of the movie version of Friday Night Lights. Earlier reports even speculated that 8 Mile director Curtis Hanson would helm the movie.

Given the variety of these auteurs' past works and big-screen resumes, who do you think would make the best director of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton?
