Fifteen years after he first saved Earth from alien invasion, is Will Smith ready to do it again? Independence Day director Roland Emmerich is hoping the answer is yes.

According to The Lantern, the blockbuster director has already finished writing the screenplay for the sequel and is trying to reunite the original cast — including Smith, Vivica Fox, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman — for Independence Day 2.

“We’ve talked to him, but naturally he wants to see a script, which I totally understand.” Emmerich says of Smith’s interest in the project. But the director is hopeful. “I’d say hold tight, it’s happening soon.”

Regardless, Smith won't be changing into his flight suit just yet. Independence Day 2 is not expected to be released before 2014. Until then, mankind will have to fend for itself.
