Aretha Franklin Biopic Is Now on Hold

The Queen of Soul’s big-screen story takes a backseat to her new music projects.

Audiences wanting to see exactly how Aretha Franklin got the r-e-s-p-e-c-t in showbiz to become the Queen of Soul music will apparently have to wait just a little longer. At her 70th birthday party in New York City this past weekend, Franklin told the Associated Press that her much anticipated planned film biopic is currently on hold.

“It’s in a limbo position,” she says. “It’s just a lot going on.”

The other projects Franklin is referring to include helping her grandson negotiate a record contract. In addition, releasing new music with a major record label and reuniting her with music biz legend Clive Davis.

Despite her movie biopic being in the infancy meeting stage, Franklin has been extremely vocal over the past year about the talents she wanted behind and in front of the camera for her life story. The Queen of Soul hinted that director Taylor Hackford of Ray fame might helm the movie and she expressed interest in everyone from Halle Berry to Jennifer Hudson to portray her. And Franklin's short wish list to portray sisters Erma, Carolyn and brother Cecil were Nia Long, Kerry Washington and Blair Underwood.

With music being Franklin’s first love and the fact that films often take several years to produce, even when all participants are actively working on it, it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing the Queen’s story on the big screen anytime soon. But some of us will keep daydreaming and thinking of you (and your movie), Aretha.
