Both films exceeded expectations.

It's no secret that rises in theater attendance is directly proportional to escalating temperatures, and this weekend was no exception. Audiences flocked to air-conditioned theaters to see Madagascar 3 and Prometheus, which both performed above expectations.

Family-friendly Madagascar 3, voiced by Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ben Stiller, won the #1 spot with $60.4 million, while Idris Elba's dark science fiction epic Prometheus came in #2 with a healthy $50 million.

Snow White and the Huntsmen, which debuted in first place last weekend, fell to the third spot and Men in Black 3 came in fourth in it's third week of release. Both films have fared well at the box office, with talk of sequels mounting.

Next week, Rock of Ages (which features a cameo by Mary J. Blige) sweeps in to unseat the family-friendly films.
