Audiences gravitated toward frights over the Labor Day weekend at the box office. The Possession scared up a first place finish with a higher-than-expected $21.3 million and becoming the second biggest Labor Day opening of all time, beating Transporter 2 but falling short of 2007's Halloween, which still holds the record at $30.6 million.

Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy's Lawless came a distant but still respectable second, with $15.1 in six days of release.

Meanwhile, in the world of so-called non-fiction, the controversial anti-Obama documentary 2016: Obama's America snuck into the top ten. The film has grossed $20.4 million to date, despite abysmal reviews and public backlash, making it the fifth highest-grossing political doc of all time and squarely in Michael Moore's territory in terms of gross.

In other news, The Dark Knight Rises finally crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide gross, making a sweet end to Christopher Nolan's critically and commercially-triumphant trilogy.

Next week, Boris Kodjoe will aim to thrill in Resident Evil: Retribution and Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson and Anthony Mackie will bring us back to high school in the reunion comedy 10 Years.
