Summer vacation is officially over for Cuba Gooding Jr. and Toni Braxton. The stars are back to work with new film projects.
Gooding, who is currently hard at work on Lee Daniels' The Butler alongside an all-star ensemble cast, will follow it up with a lead role in Something Whispered. Set in 1850, the story centers on a man named Samuel, who attempts to free his family from the brutality of slavery on a tobacco plantation. They are tracked by a group of ruthless hired slave hunters as they make their way North via the Underground Railroad.
Meanwhile, singer and reality star Toni Braxton is heading to the world of fiction with a starring role in the Lifetime original movie A Narrow Bridge. Braxton will play a Black Christian woman who falls for a white Jewish man in the made-for-television film, which will also co-star her 9-year-old son Diezel.
Lifetime is on a role with its Black-centric original films. Its remake of Steel Magnolias, starring Queen Latifah, is due to air in October, and it recently announced plans to begin production on Parallel Lives, a biopic of civil rights figures Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King starring Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett.
