The 16th annual Urbanworld Film Festival will kick off on Sept. 20 with the world premiere of Being Mary Jane, a BET Original Movie starring Gabrielle Union, Richard Brooks, Raven Goodwin, Richard Roundtree, Omari Hardwick and Tika Sumpter. The film was written by Girlfriends creator Mara Brock Akil and directed by Salim Akil, the power couple behind Sparkle and Jumping the Broom. 
Being Mary Jane is about the personal life of a successful, single television news anchor (Union) and her friends, family and career. The made-for-television film will spin off into a series, which will also star Union.  
Founded by Stacey Spikes, the Urbanworld Film Festival is a five-day celebration of the best in urban cinema, digital and social media. The New York City-based event features hundreds of screenings, panel discussions and staged readings. BET is a presenting sponsor of the Urbanworld Film Festival.
