Emmys 2012: Modern Family Wins Big But Tracy Morgan Steals the Show

Plus: Award-winning favorite Mad Men receives 17 nominations, but gets snubbed.

It appears Emmy voters haven’t lost their love for a certain TV family.

ABC’s Modern Family continued its gold winning streak last night as TV's most honored comedy, picking up the best comedy award for the third year in a row, a directing accolade for co-creator Steve Levitan and acting trophies for Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet.

Also, there appears to be a new drama in Emmy’s eye — the terrorism thriller Homeland. Already a critical favorite, the series won the coveted best drama Emmy, plus top acting awards for Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. Homeland also picked up an award for writing.

A big loser for the evening turned out to be AMC’s Mad Men, the '60s period drama racked up a staggering 17 nominations, but won no Emmys for the entire evening. Former Emmy darling Tina Fey of 30 Rock, which is entering its final season, also went home empty handed.

A few surprise Emmy winners of the night included Jon Cryer of CBS's much talked about network comedy Two and a Half Men. Cryer had won previously for best supporting actor, but now, minus the show's former star Charlie Sheen, he picked up this year's award for best comic actor. Also, Julia Louis-Dreyfus earned the best comedy actress award for her freshman HBO comedy Veep, which thus far has received very mixed reviews.

But Tracy Morgan stole the show with a Twitter prank via himself and host Jimmy Kimmel. Morgan jokingly passed out on stage and Kimmel tweeted, "Oh my God - Tracy Morgan just passed out onstage at the Emmys - turn ABC on NOW!" Over 25,000 people tweeted about their prank. At least some color made it to the Emmy stage!
