Fantasia has enjoyed the benefits of being something of a gay icon, but she may have bitten the hand that feeds her. The American Idol winner has come under fire for comments she made on Instagram that seem derogatory to same-sex marriage.

“I Rise ABOVE IT ALL!!! THE WORLD IS GONE MAD. KIDS, THE GOVERMENT, THE church House… Everybody Trying!!!!!!!,” she wrote. “It’s a lot that going on that the Bible speaks about we should Not be doing. Weed legal in some places, Gay Marriage Legal BUT YET IM JUDGED!!! Im not doing Nothing for you… My Life!!!!”

The LGBT community and supporters did not appreciate Fantasia's stance and voiced their disappointment on her news feed and on blogs. The singer responded with two statements of apology, one through her representative and one addressed directly to her fans.

Ms. Barrino is not now, nor has she ever been an opponent of the LGBT community. She has supported and performed at numerous events that are sponsored by the LGBT community," the first statement read, adding that Fantasia's comments were taken "far out of context."

“I, Fantasia Monique Barrino, don’t judge anyone because I don’t want to be judged," she later said in her own words, via Instagram. "The gay community is one of my largest supporters. I support the gay community as they support me. Bloggers please stop misrepresenting the facts.”

Fantasia has been the subject of unwanted press over the last couple of years due to her on-off relationship with baby daddy Antwaun Cook. She also revealed recently that her brother was robbed at gunpoint. Hopefully, the new year will mean better luck for the embattled singer.
