Bill T. Jones is tapped to direct the production based on the Blaxploitation classic.
Following in the tradition of many movies turned musicals like Ghost and Legally Blonde, a '70s Blaxploitation film is getting a Great White Way makeover. Broadway World is reporting via the Howard Stern Show that Super Fly the musical will make its debut on Broadway in late 2013.
Bill T. Jones, who choreographed and directed the Tony award-winning musical Fela! will also provide the same double duty on Super Fly, which is based on the 1972 film. Music mogul Tommy Mottola recently announced on the Howard Stern Show that his Mottola Group, along with the Dodgers Developmental Lab, held a workshop for the production last spring. Fela!, which was produced by Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, earned Jones a Tony award for Best Choreography.
Super Fly the musical will feature a book from Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and musical direction by Ron Melrose. Like the film version, the production will feature the classic songs and score by Curtis Mayfield, as well as other soul, funk and pop songs from the '70s era.
