Evil Dead

More than two decades after the original Evil Dead launched the humorous horror trend, a remake of Sam Raimi's cult classic is at the top of the box office again. The more straight-forward Evil Dead, written by Diablo Cody and produced by original star Bruce Campbell, scared up $26 million in ticket sales and rose right to the top of the box office.

It was followed closely by the recurring hit The Croods and then G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Olympus Has Fallen, starring Angela Bassett and Gerard Butler, hung on to the top five, followed by Tyler Perry's Temptation in sixth place. That film has earned $38.4 million in two weeks, giving Perry a legit hit in the adult drama genre despite a bashing by critics.

Next week, Snoop Dogg and Katt Williams' Scary Movie 5 will fight it out with Jackie Robinson biopic 42, starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, for first place.
