Between a new season of Luther and a starring role in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, Idris Elba is having his biggest year yet. But the actor seems most excited about his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in a biopic due out in November.
Elba stars as the anti-Apartheid leader in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and touts the film as "hands down the best" Mandela biopic to date. "Not in terms of performance…but my film’s about his entire life. Anyone wanting to understand who Mandela was should go and watch my film."
Though the film's release is months away, we have our first look at the project with the release of the poster. If the art is reflective of the film, we're likely in for an edgier portrayal of Mandela.
The British star is the latest in a string of Black actors, including Morgan Freeman and Terrence Howard, to play the South African leader. Mandela himself has suffered ill health lately, leaving many to wonder if the 94-year-old will live to see this latest incarnation of his life on the big screen.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is due out on November 27.
