Tyler Perry is suing the producers of his television series For Better or Worse following an accident that set fire to his Tyler Perry Studios in May 2012. The lawsuit asserts the fire happened after a technician put a hot light too close to a wooden façade on the set.
Perry claims the fire occured as a result of negligence on the part of the producers, who should have hired more qualified technicians to avoid such accidents. He is seeking $1.8 million in damages.
Interestingly, Perry has written and directed more than 50 episodes of For Better or Worse since the fire occurred and is himself listed as one of the producers of the show. The production company behind the show, which is typically the entity held responsibile in lawsuits and other claims, is Tyler Perry Studios.
The May 2012 fire was just the first time TPS went up in flames. Another fire broke out a the Atlanta-based studio in August 2012. No word if that blaze is also being blamed on For Better or Worse producers.
