Straight Outta Compton Filmmakers Speak Out Over Casting Outrage

Racially-biased audition notice for NWA biopic angered fans.

Days after a casting notice for the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton caused an outrage online, several of the filmmakers behind the project are serving up apologies.
The casting call, which was seeking female extras ranked from "A Girls" to "D Girls" according to skin tone (with the "D Girls," who are meant to play "out of shape, poor" women, calling for the darkest-skinned girls), angered many.
Now, the casting director who posted and presumably wrote the notice, is apologizing profusely for her lapse in judgment. "This is Kristan from Sande Alessi Casting. I've been wanting to say this for two days and now I can," the statement read. "I would like to sincerely apologize for recently posting a casting announcement that used offensive language to recruit women for a film our agency is working on. My intention was not to offend anyone and I’m so deeply sorry for not realizing the insensitivity in its content. I'm truly so sorry."
Universal Pictures and the filmmakers behind the project, which include director F. Gary Gray and producers Ice Cube and Will Packer, have released their own statement on the fiasco, mostly to distance themselves from it. Stating that they "did not approve and do not condone the information" in the casting notice, the statement conceded, "We regret and sincerely apologize for being in any way associated with the offensive descriptions it contained."

Is the apology too little, too late? It remains to be seen if fans will retaliate further.
