Rihanna's "B**** Better Have My Money" is all the internet is talking about today after the singer dropped the epic video for the single at midnight last night. Though young folks may credit RiRi for the song's catchy title, fans of Blaxploitation films know it really comes from a guy named Antonio Fargas. The actor recited a poem with the same name during a competition for Pimp of the Year in a memorable scene from the classic film I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, and now he's giving props to the Bajan singer for repurposing it.
“I was at the premier for I’m Gonna Get You Sucka and Eddie Murphy was sitting behind me and said that scene is the funniest thing he’s ever seen,” Fargas tells WatchLOUD.com. “When you get that kind of co-sign and get guys like Will Smith, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence [giving] you jobs on their shows because they know who’s shoulders they stand… I feel like it’s the same thing Rihanna has seen… this was an opportunity for her to create something of her own. And I take my hat off to her for giving me that respect.”
Though Fargas isn't seeking royalties — as far as we know — from the single, he does hope to meet Rihanna in person soon. “I have family from Barbados so we have something in common and I’m sure I’ll have that opportunity to smile at her," he says. "I just want to say well done, Rihanna. I know what it takes to do what she’s doing.”
