Any girl would kill to have Solange’s deliciously original style. The singer and accidental fashion icon pieces together looks with her brilliant stylist, Charles Wade. The NYU alum, who insists that Solo’s picks are the result of a respectful collaboration, generously detailed what inspires her, where he and the star shop, and what we might be surprised to find in the spunky celeb’s closet.

Detail the thought process that goes into Solo's look of the day.

Charles Wade: Working with Solange is just like playing dress-up with your cool girlfriend. She has such distinct taste and an eye for color, pattern and texture play. And not to mention her body is sort of sick with those long legs. Solange has a really clear idea as to what works for her and what she does and doesn't like and also what's really event-appropriate. Such clear vision really helps her own her looks. Most people see her as this crazy fashion risk-taker, which she is to a degree, but she has a very cerebral process and incorporates so much inspiration from her life, passions and travels. Her style is very personal, not “quirky.”

How do you find her eclectic pieces? Do you all shop together?

CW:
If you really look at what Solange wears, the pieces aren't as eclectic as one may think. It's how they're put together. There's a mix of vintage and vintage-inspired pieces with tailored pieces with distinct patterns and silhouettes. And, of course, color. But again, it's her courage and playfulness with how she likes to style it all. We don't really shop together, but Solange always gives very clear direction and offers amazing references and inspiration boards that include architecture, furniture, travel photography, works of art and more.

Her accessories are always fabulous. Where can the masses find similar pieces?

CW: Thrift and vintage stores and flea markets. Done. Fashion is where you find it. Folks would be surprised by how many amazing, unique things you can find when you get away from the seasonal and designer mentality.

What are your fave designer labels for Solange? Which best fit her personality?

CW: I love working with new and lesser known brands from other countries. In terms of more popularly known designers, my go-to's are Dries Van Noten, Emilio Pucci, Halston, J. Crew, Lanvin, Prada, Rodarte and The Row. I usually start there and work my way out.

How would you describe her style in three words?

CW: Solange Piaget Knowles. Haha.

What are her five fashion essentials?

CW:
A tailored blazer or pant, a unique shoe, an assortment of rings, a neutral belt and color.

Is there anything I'd be shocked to find in her closet?

CW: There's lots you'd be shocked to find. I think the biggest shocker is that you won't find a bunch of price tags. Solange loves what she buys and wears what she buys!
