It's hard to believe that the stunning woman on the cover of Essence's December issue once struggled through homelessness and drug addiction and worked as a stripper to make ends meet. Today, actress Tasha Smith, 40, is letting people know that overcoming obstacles and making your dreams come true is within your grasp. The Camden, N.J. native graces the holiday cover dressed in a form-fitting white knit dress, white shaggy vest, gold jewelry, and a brilliant smile while inside she talks about how God, her family, and Tyler Perry changed her life.
Smith starred as the memorable hairdresser Angela in Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too? Later this month, she reprises her role as the sassy Angela for her new show For Better or Worse, which is being directed by Perry and based off of her character's marriage in the films.
“All those years ago, I was a girl with this dream, but with no education, no confidence, no self-esteem, nothing," Smith tells Essence. "And now God has brought me to this place of destiny, and He’s not even done with me yet…”
Catch Smith's cover story "Diary of a Happy Black Woman" in Essence's December issue, which hits stands Nov. 11. For Better or Worse premieres Nov. 25 at 9 PM ET on TBS.
