Janelle Monae is looking as polished as ever on the cover of Essence's May issue. The singer wears a white Yves Saint Laurent blouse and vintage Chanel earrings with her signature pompadour hairstyle and pop of red lipstick. Inside, Monae discusses why she wanted to stand out from the pack by not using her body to sell records.
"I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way," she said before pointing out the double standard when it comes to sex appeal in the music industry. "People don't ask Jay-Z to take off his shirt when he rhymes."
During her cover shoot for the magazine, Monae reveals what she finds most beautiful. “I think that people who give and give their time are some of the most beautiful people I know,” she says.
