The actress chats about her 12 Years a Slave role and the Oscar buzz swirling around her.
Lupita Nyong'o is a stunner, no questions asked. In her fashion shoot for DuJour magazine, the actress couldn't look any more graceful. Nyong'o flaunts styles from various high-end designers like Hermès, Roberto Cavalli, Narciso Rodriguez and a sexy ensemble consisting of a midnight blue Salvatore Ferragamo bodysuit with a Thakoon skirt.
When it comes to her sudden rush of fame, Nyong'o recalls auditioning for her breakout role as Patsy in 12 Years a Slave and not expecting to get the part once she learned the big names that were behind the film.
"When I learned Steve McQueen was directing and Brad Pitt was producing, I thought, 'Well, this is huge,'" she says. "I had no expectation of getting the role at all; it was just too out there for me to think I had a chance. So I approached the audition like a rehearsal. It was my chance to have that role for 10 minutes, and I owned it. Then I got the part and the panic began."
Since then, she's had random strangers go up to her for hugs because her character had moved them so much and she feels the pressure to spark that same reaction in her future roles. For now, she's enjoying the limelight and relishing all the Oscar buzz she's been stirring up.
"I'm definitely forced to think about it, but there's nothing to do with the thought because it's totally out of my hands," she says about a potential Oscar nomination. "I'm really fulfilled right now by the traction this film is getting. It was made to be seen, and that's what's happening — America is engaging with it and being moved and changed by it. It's really rewarding to be a part of that. That's more important to me than any award."
