Former Miss Angola, Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe in Tuesday’s competition held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, beating out finalists from Ukraine, Philippines, China and Brazil.

Lopes told the audience that as Miss Universe her focus will be to assist her country in maintaining peace and working globally to combat HIV.

"I've worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs," she said according to the Associated Press. "I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more.”
