President Obama to Deliver Commencement Speech at Morehouse College

Obama chose Morehouse for its "notable alumni," which includes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

President Obama is set to deliver the commencement speech at Atlanta's Morehouse College this May. A White House official said Obama chose the school because it is "known for its high standard for excellence in learning and social consciousness, Morehouse is home to a long list of notable alumni that spans the last three centuries."
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is among those who graduated from the school. The private, all-male liberal arts college, founded on Feb. 18, 1867, also has the honor of being the first historically Black college to produce a Rhodes scholar. The institution was named Atlanta Baptist College until it was renamed in 1913 in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, the corresponding secretary of the Northern Baptist Home Mission Society.
“The president’s life story trumpets an ethic that we try to instill in all Morehouse men, namely excellence without apology or compromise," Morehouse President John Silvanus Wilson Jr. said.
