Q-Tip Defends Best New Artist Winner Esperanza Spalding

Published February 14, 2011

When Esperanza Spalding nabbed the Best New Artist trophy at last night's (Feb. 13) Grammy Awards, some Justin Bieber loyalists and Drake fans took to Twitter to express their frustration. The talented jazz musician, who is both a singer and bassist, was graciously accepting her award at the same time she was becoming a trending topic on twitter.

"I happen 2 b producing esperanza's next Lp. She's a sweet talented woman wish the haters wld be more careful w/ comments," Q-Tip wrote on twitter the next morning in support of the new artist. When Esperanza won the category, Q-Tip (who tweets under the name @qtiptheabstract) excitedly tweeted her name "Esperanza!!!!!!!!!"

Q-Tip isn't the first celeb to show their support for this new artist. The singer was part of the 2010 BET Awards tribute to Prince, and has also been on the road with the Purple one for his "Welcome To America" tour.

Spalding beat out Drake, Bieber, Mumford & Sons and Florence + the Machine for the Best New Artist Grammy. Her next project, Radio Music Society, is due out later this year.
