He’s got American Idol and X-Factor, so it’s only right that Simon Cowell would take a stab at putting a spin on the popular reality competition shows by trying to get DJs in the mix.
The famously cantankerous media mogul is in negotiations with Hollywood power couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith to produce a talent search show to find the world’s next star DJ. According to the Hollywoord Reporter, Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment is partnering with the Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television to launch the still untitled show on international and domestic platforms.
"DJ’s are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show,” Cowell said in a statement announcing the news.
A pro at executive producing reality talent shows, Cowell’s resume includes The X Factor, America's Got Talent, American Inventor, Celebrity Duets Pop Idol and American Idol. And judging from the tweet he sent on Wednesday, Cowell is pretty thrilled by this next opportunity.
"Excited to announce new DJ show. I will NOT be judging this show. Excited to be working with @jadapsmith. Stay tuned!” he wrote on Twitter.
There was no word on whether Will or Jada would have an on-screen role in the project, but with their backgrounds in music (Will the rapper and Jada the rocker) the soundscape of the show should be wide-ranging.
