Yelawolf went from unsigned hype to the majors last year with the release of his debut album Radioactive, on Shady Records/Interscope. But the Alabama rapper says being on a major label isn't all it's cracked up to be. In a recent interview with DJ Skee, Yelawolf advised other up-and-coming artists that they don't actually need label backing, and admitted that he was disappointed with his own situation at Interscope.
"You don't really f---in' need a label anymore; you don't need a major label, you don't need none of that sh-t," he argued. "If they're not absolutely working as a promotional company, as an engine to promote your music every single f---in' day. Because you're on it every day. Your management, your publicist, your team is on it every day. So when you sign a contract, you better be damn sure that they have obligations to work your sh-t."
The "Hard White" rapper said the lesson was one that he learned the hard way.
"A lot of nonsense comes with it," he said of being signed to a major. "I wish I could say that I'm happy with my situation, but I'm not. I'm just putting it out there, that's my job…I don't have anything personal against Interscope or anyone up there, but my situation is not what it's supposed to be. At all."
But whether they have label support or not, Catfish Billy said artists should take responsibility for their own careers.
"When you join a label, you really shouldn't be joining them to create a career. You should be joining them to better your situation," he said. "That way you're not really hurt by them not working, you're only helped if they do work."
As it is, the Shady artist doesn't seem to be having too much trouble staying active. He recently released the mixtape Heart of Dixie and has completed a five-song EP with Travis Barker called Psycho White. He's also working on his next solo album, Love Story, as well as a potential collaboration album with Big K.R.I.T. called Country Cousins.
