T-Pain: Future Is Not Using Auto-Tune Correctly

Pain schools the ATL rapper on finer points of the vocal effect.

From 2005 to 2008 T-Pain dominated the music charts in large part to his use of the Auto-Tune vocal effect. Now that Auto-Tune is helping to spark the rise of Atlanta rapper Future, Pain has been a bit critical of his use of the technology.

During an interview with Hartford, CT's Hot 93.7, T-Pain stated that he doesn’t believe Future is using the vocal effect correctly. Though he commended the rising hip hop star for his songwriting abilities he knocked his performance with the technology.

"I don’t think Future gets the technology very well. I don’t think he understands how it actually works," he said. "He’s writing great songs. He's a great writer. Keep in mind, you can use Auto-Tune and you can know how to work it perfectly, but you still have to know how to write a good song. Just because he sound good doesn't mean he's saying good stuff. As far as how he uses Auto-Tune, I don't think he knows how it works. I think he’s thinking that you just turn it on, and then it just happens. But nah, he writes great, great hooks and great songs themselves. I just don't think he actually knows how to use Auto-Tune yet."

Teddy P went on to offer some advice on the finer points of Auto-Tune to Future and many of the other musicians who are currently using it incorrectly.

"A lot of people don’t sing with it, a lot of people just sing and then put it on after, which is a terrible mistake. There’s a lot of stuff you’ve gotta know about Auto-Tune before you can start using it, because it’s the hot thing to do. But Future’s still great right now, he’s doing his thing."

T-Pain’s critique follows a recent pot shot he took at Future on Instagram. Pain mocked the rapper for using his Bugatti in a music video.

"Funny how ‘the new T-Pain’ has to use ‘The old T-Pain’s’ Bugatti for his Bugatti hook," he wrote.
