Harvard Students Protest Tyga Show

Students unhappy with rapper Tyga's explicit lyrics.

Not all students at Harvard are welcoming Tyga with open arms to the annual Yardfest. In fact, there is a protest being waged that accuses him of making music that promotes sexism and rape culture.

The Young Money rapper is scheduled to headline university's annual concert, this year being held on April 15th.

An online petition spearheaded by Harvard senior Leah Reis-Dennis is urging organizers to pull him from the lineup.

"Tyga is notorious for his explicitly and violently misogynistic lyrics," Reis-Dennis writes in the petition, posted on Change.org.

She cites lyrics in "B-----s Ain't S--t" and "B---h Betta' Have My Money" to help prove her point.

"We demand that Harvard rescind its offer to Tyga, because we believe that Harvard should not provide a platform for music that promotes sexism and rape culture."

There are over 1900 digital signatures and an April 1st addendum that acknowledges that the "Rack City" rapper may just be a product of his environment.

"Violence and sexism are not unique to Tyga’s music; deeper, systemic changes must be made. However, Tyga’s invitation to perform at Yardfest provides an opportunity for a tangible, if short term, response to rape culture. Activism surrounding Tyga’s performance at Harvard should not be divorced from activism around larger structural issues of race, gender, and homophobia."

The petition is addressed to Harvard's Office of Student Life. The College Events Board and Concert Commission is organizing the event.

The university has not yet announced if it will scrap his appearance.
