K. Michelle Kicks Off Music Matters Tour

The songstress dazzles in her first two nights on stage.

While there has been a rash of artists experiencing major glitches on tour of late, it’s been a smooth takeoff for K. Michelle’s Rebellious Soul Tour. The BET Music Matters backed jaunt opened in San Francisco on Monday (November 4) and hit Los Angeles’ House of Blues last night to cap two stellar nights of soul stirring fun. The world famous music hot spot was the place to be as fans, celebrities and music executives all came out to see K. Michelle and Sevyn Streeter.

U.K. songstress Rachel Kerr gave the audience a glimpse of the future delivering a powerful opening set. The crowd especially "turnt up" when she performed "Karma."

"What's beautiful about music is that everyone inspires each other and just listening to (Sevyn and K. Michelle's) vocal ability, and seeing their performance style, it's hard to be around people so talented and not be inspired, so I'm taking notes," Rachel said after her set.

Next up was Chris Brown protege Sevyn Streeter, who came out to a roaring ovation. The former Rich Girl singer, backed by a pair of male backup dancers, had the place rocking with her hit songs "I like It" and "It Won't Stop," and she even brought up a pair of ladies from the audience who received a striptease from Sevyn's dancers. The L.A. transplant (via Florida) talked about playing in front of her "other" hometown crowd.

"I'm from Florida but I live in L.A. It's like a second home to me and I got a lot of family and friends out here, so to be here at the House of Blues, on tour with K. Michelle, it doesn't get any better," she exclaimed.

The sold out crowd, which included Atlantic Records executive Michael Kyser as well as Tank and designer Nikki Chi, waited anxiously for K. Michelle, but was treated to a special surprise. 106 & Park alums Terrence J and Rocsi stepped out on stage together to give a shout out to the audience and get the crowd pumped up for the performance. (Just like the old days!)

BET President of Music Programming and Specials Stephen G. Hill, who was also in the house, spoke about how it felt to see the duo back together for a moment.

"What I love about that is once you're family you're always family," Hill remarked. "That's why I love working at BET, once you're in there you're family, and it doesn't matter how long you're gone from there it's always a place that embraces you and envelopes you."

Hill also spoke about the success and the importance of Music Matters.

"The idea [behind Music Matters] is to find artists that are going to matter 10 years from now," Hill told BET.com. "We identify them and give them an expanded platform to show that music matters. We wanted to identify artists that you would still care about in 10 years and I think Kelly G, Omar [Grant], Cristina [Chavez], Reggie Williams and everybody at BET has done a great job of identifying artists like Miguel, like Marsha Ambrosius, like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar before, who are artists you're going to care about in 10 years."

Now it was time for K. Michelle. Backed by one male and one female backup singer and a full band, the Love & Hip Hop star made her presence felt, immediately proclaiming, "That sound needs to get fixed or someone's getting fired!" The sultry singer then proceeded to bring the house down with her bevy of hits like "V.S.O.P." "How Many Times" and "Fakin' It."

After the show, TGT crooner Tank headed backstage to give props to his label mates.

"I'm just proud of these young ladies," Tank professed. "These women are packing out these venues and it's a good night for our company!"
