Janelle Monáe Not Feeling 'Classic Man' and 'Fancy' Comparisons

"She steal from us, we steal back," she says of Iggy Azalea.

Janelle Monáe sure had a lot to say this week. On Friday, the singer was rudely cut off while making an important point about the Black Lives Matter movement during her performance of protest anthem "Hell You Talmbout" on the Today show (nice work, NBC anchors).

But, earlier in the week, Monáe had free reign over the airwaves on Hot 97's Ebro In the Morning, when she pulled no punches during a discussion comparing her Wondaland Records' labelmate Jidenna's hit "Classic Man" and Iggy Azalea's "Fancy."

STOP THE PRESSES: WHEN MUSIC STARS CLASH WITH THE MEDIA

After co-host Peter Rosenberg brought up the irony of Azalea potentially suing over the perceived melodic similarities between the two hits (Jidenna clarified that his track doesn't sample "Fancy," but that they agreed to pay the Aussie pop star a royalty anyway to avoid a Robin Thicke-type situation), Monáe jumped in with this missile: “She steal from us, we steal back.”

Perhaps realizing statements like that are not the best way to avoid lawsuits, she quickly backpedaled. “It’s all love. I mean, we all inspire each other… that’s what it’s about," she said.
