Mac Miller Has Some Things to Say About White Guilt

The 24-year-old rapper talks his choice to be a “corny white rapper” over a drug addict.

Mac Miller touches on the subject of being a white rapper, keeping it as 100 as he can, in a new documentary.

Back in December, the rapper took to Twitter posing the question, “Dear white people that listen to rap music... what have you done for the #BlackLivesMatter movement?”

His series of tweets opened the necessary and important dialogue that continued in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s recent release “White Privilege II,” overall exploring the topic of how white privilege and cultural appropriation inevitably exist within hip hop.

The rapper, now based in New York City, by way of Pittsburgh, reopens the conversation in a new 12-minute documentary from Fader entitled Stopped Making Excuses, touching on the subject several times throughout the in-depth footage.

“I think I got a benefit from being white,” Miller says in the clip. “I think white kids can see me and see themselves, like ‘that could be me,’”

“I think that was a huge boost for me, and a guilty thing when I was coming up, like 'Ah f**k, am I only here because I’m white,'” Miller continues. “Is that the only reason?”

Miller also touches on his past drug use, taking it further, saying, “I’d rather be the corny white rapper than the drugged-out mess that can’t even get out of his house.”

Cameos in the documentary include French Montana, 88-Keys and the late Chinx.
