Tanganyika gains independence from Great Britain.

<p>The East African nation of Tanganyika, which would later merge with the country of Zanzibar to become <a target="_blank" href="http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2843.htm">Tanzania</a>, proclaimed its independence from Great Britain. Tanganyika was the first East African country to become a sovereign state.</p>
