54th Massachusetts Regiment of the Union Army is formed.

The 54th Massachusetts Regiment of the Union Army, the first African-American infantry unit organized during the Civil War, was formed. The regiment's heroism was celebrated in the Academy Award-winning 1989 film, Glory, starring Denzel Washington.
