Atlanta Race Riots 1905

Spurred by fabricated newspaper headlines that purported African-American men had sexually assaulted white women, an angry mob of 10,000 white men stormed through Atlanta on Sept. 22, 1905.

At least 25 Black men and one white man were killed in the attack, and as many as 100 others were believed to be injured. The incident raged on for several days until a local militia broke up the fighting.

Before the attacks, Atlanta was hailed as a city of harmony between Blacks and whites, with a booming economy and thriving African-American community.

"But despite the accomplishments of the Black community, Atlanta remained one of the most segregated cities in the South," PBS reports.
