Getting There: Inauguration Day Dos and Don’ts

Leave your backpacks, coolers and pocketbook pets at home. These are just a few of the items included in a list of Inauguration Day dos and don'ts in a plan released by the Secret Service this week.

These are just a few of the items included in a list of Inauguration Day dos and don'ts in a plan released by the Secret Service this week.
1.  Leave your backpacks, coolers and pocketbook pets at home.

2.  Do make sure you have your ticket and a valid ID to witness the swearing-in ceremonies for President Obama and Vice President Biden on the Capitol grounds. Visit the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies web site for information on how to get tickets. They are free and distributed by congressional offices. A ticket isn't required, however, to view them from the National Mall.

3.  Signs and placards are allowed at the inaugural parade and the Mall, but they, too, have restrictions. The signs must be made only from cardboard, poster board or cloth and cannot be more than three feet wide, 20 feet long and one quarter inch thick. If they don't meet these requirements, they will be confiscated.

4.  Many roads and some Metro subway stops will be closed. The Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security have created a map outlining road closures and vehicle restrictions. In addition, the District of Columbia government is providing a pedestrian walking map and other maps here.

5.  Information also will be available before and during Inauguration Day on social media sites. Use the hashtag #inaug2013. To receive emergency alerts and other public notifications, text the word "inauguration" to 888777.

6.  Security screening in Washington may make getting through an airport seem like a walk in the park. Be prepared for long lines at the Capitol, entering the parade route, the White House viewing stand and the inaugural balls at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

7.  Wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes, and don't forget your patience.
8.  Most important, have some fun!
