Edward Chandler, the second African-American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, was born on April 10, 1887, in Ocala, Florida.
Chandler earned his bachelor of science degree from Howard University in 1913 and master of science from the University of Illinois in 1917.
Chandler became a chemist at Dicks David & Heller Company from 1917 to 1921 and also was a plant chemist for Abbott Laboratories from 1921 to 1924. Chandler researched triphenylmethane dyes as consulting chemist in Lake County, Illinois.
The cause of his death is still unknown.
