This Day in Black History: Nov. 26, 1939

Singer/actress Tina Turner was born in Nutbush, Tennessee, on Nov. 26, 1939.

The world knows her as Tina Turner, but the chart-topping singer was born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939. As a teen, Turner moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where she discovered a vibrant R&B scene, met her future husband Ike Turner and began performing with his band the Kings of Rhythm.

The duo's first big hit came in 1960 with "A Fool in Love," which led to a name change for the band to the Ike and Tina Turner Review. They achieved international fame in 1966 with the album River Deep, Mountain High. A few years later, they toured as the opening act for the immensely popular Rolling Stones.

Though successful in their musical collaboration, the Turners' marriage was marked by Ike's reported physical and drug and alcohol abuse. The couple split in 1976 and divorced in 1978. Perhaps one of the world's most energetic performers, Tina went on to have an extraordinarily accomplished career on her own in music and film. She has earned eight Grammy Awards and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Turner currently lives in Zurich, Switzerland, with husband and record executive Erwin Bach. She recently relinquished her U.S. citizenship.
